  SECTION 4:TRANSLATION TEST (2)

I always believe that the most efficient meeting in China is the parents' meeting called by the school. The parents' meeting, is in full conformity with the requirements for the “building of an honest and clean government”. With respect to meetings organized by a certain trade or the unit where one works, the person wants to know whether the venue of a meeting is in a scenic area frequented by tourists and whether gifts of souvenirs will be handed out after the meeting before he decides whether to go or not to go. But for the parents' meeting, nobody will ever think of that. While other meetings are rarely convened on time, the parents' meeting invariably starts with punctuality. At the parents' meeting, every parent listens and takes notes with rapt attention lest he or she might miss anything. For many meetings,it does not really matter whether they are to be held or not, but to the school and the parents, the parents' meeting is absolutely necessary.

  听力测试试题录音文字稿:

  SECTION 1:LISTENING TEST

  Part A: Spot Dictation

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it.Fill in each of the blanks with the word you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET. Remember you will hear the passage ONLY ONCE. Now let s begin Part A with Spot Dictation.

(Woman) For most of us, success and the ability to control our own fate are linked to our ability to lead. Leadership, in fact, is something that concerns everyone.A leader does not necessarily occupy a formal leadership position, for example, as the assistant secretary of state or the chief executive officer. Very often people with leadership titles are not necessarily leaders. Parents, spouses, teammates, colleagues, friends, classmates or playmates can all be leaders if they so desire. A teacher can also be as a leader as he or she is a friend. In fact, most of us spend a great deal of time trying to get other people to do willingly what we want them to do, and that, in the purest sense of the term, is what leadership is all about. Of course, we can force people to do things for a short period of time, but that is not leadership. A true leader is apt to persuade and influence other people to accept his ideas, to follow him and to take action.

So, what is the essence of leadership? Basically, what is required of a true leader? It is communication.Without communication, leadershipdoes not exist. It is impossible to get someone to do something without verbal or nonverbal communication. We relyon communication to manage and motivate. We use communication to resolve conflict and facilitate innovation as well as to negotiate.

We may expect our leader to be frank, direct, and to the point. We may also expect that our ideal leader listens,is willing to talk,is open to discussion and constructive suggestions,is receptive to new ideas, and is supportive. But, in most social interactions and economic activities, an ideal and recognized leader invariably emerges as the most competent communicator.

(Woman) Could you describe this pain to me?

(Man) It's like … like boiling water running down my leg. It's been getting worse lately, too. I've been losing sleep.

(Woman) You mean the pain's been keeping you awake.

(Man) Yes, that's right. This pain's been keeping me awake.

(Woman) Now, tell me, how long have you had this trouble?

(Man) You mean the pain? Well, it has been with me for about a year now.

(Woman) Hmmm … have you been getting tired lately after you ve taken a walk? For example, have you been getting a bit short of breath, perhaps?

(Man) Why, yes!Yes, I have, doctor!

(Woman) Hmmm …I think we'd better give you a few tests here in hospital.

(Man) Do you think it's serious, doctor?

  (Woman) Probably not.

(Man) But … Doctor Martin,my local doctor, thinks it's only that I've been knocking myself out on that research project of mine for too long.

(Woman) That could be the reason. You've been working too hard, I presume. But, don't worry. We'll soon find out.

Question No.14. According to Dr. martin, what might be one reason for the man's trouble?

Question 15 to 18 are based on the following talk

(Man) Deserts are fascinating geographical areas, and I want to spend the next couple of lectures describing why they are so fascinating. First, let's discuss some of the vital statistics of a desert area. Deserts are found,of course,in dry areas, areas too dry to support grasslands.Deserts often receive less than 10 inches of rain annually. And when it does rain, much of the rainwater either evaporates or runs off the barren soil. Finally, you need to realize that all the plants and animals that live in the desert have adapted amazingly to this lack of water. For example,a typical and well- known desert plant is the cactus. A cactus has shallow roots that grow over a wide area, so that it can pick up as much water as possible. Since cacti are without leaves, they lose little water from their surface through evaporation. Another desert plant, the mesquite, gets water in an opposite way. It has roots that may extend as deep as 30 feet. What about the animals in the desert? How have they adapted to the desert heat? First, most desert animals come out only at night in order to avoid the extremes in heat. Second, these animals try to find shade or burrow into the sand which may serve as protection against heat. But how do these animals conserve water? They obviously need water to live. Well, some animals drink the moisture provided from the morning dew. Others like the kangaroo rat never drink water at all. Finally, Reptiles such as snakes and lizards have skins that prevent much water from evaporating from their bodies.

Question No.15. According to the talk, where can we find deserts?

Question No.16. In what way does the cactus, a typical desert plant, get water?

Question No.17. How do most animals adapt themselves to the high temperature of the desert heat?

Question No.18. Which of the following is the lecturer primarily concerned about in his talk?

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the following conversation.

(Man) Hi, Magi, I m back. Thanks for covering the phones for me.

(Woman) My pleasure.I wish I had an office like this.Never a dull moment!Something always going on here. Except I don't see how you ever get any work done.

(Man) Well, were there a lot of calls?

(Woman) Not so many, I'm afraid. Four calls, I think. Let's see … Steve called. He wanted to know how long it would take to have the sample of our new product delivered to the London office. He said he'll call back. And uh …

  (Man) Mr. Russo didn't call?

(Woman) Oh, I forgot. Yeah … Now what did he call about? I remember. He said he'd made the arrangements for the interview. He'd like to have it scheduled for next Thursday. I was talking to him when David came in … and I guess I forgot to write the message down. He was in a big hurry to see Mr. Leach.

(Man) Hmm. Well, thanks, Magi. I d better get to work. I've got to get the report ready for Mr. Leach by two o clock this afternoon.

(Woman) Yeah. I've got to get back to my office. By the way, there's a meeting going on in Mr. Leach's office and he left word he didn't want to be disturbed. I'll leave your phone messages here on your desk. See you late.

  (Man) Yeah. See you .

Question No.19. How many telephone massages has the woman taken down?

Question No.20. What did Mrs. Peterson suggest in her call?

Question No.21. Why did the woman fail to write one of the messages down?

Question No.22. What was going on in Mr. Leach's office?

Questions 23 to 26 are based on the following talk.

(Woman) Nowadays, we often learn about so called pop stuffs: pop music, pop filmmaking, pop art, pop magazine, pop culture, and even pop psychology. The English word “pop” is short for popular, and popular, in its true sense, means “of or of the people”.

The Pop revolution of the 1960s had changed the pattern of English life. It gave the young people an importance and influence they had never had before.Just how far- reaching that influence is, can be judged from a look at advertisements. The young are now regarded as one of the most important markets for consumer goods.

Take for example the clothes industry that in some way reflects the modern British culture. Most British girls today take a great deal of interest in clothes and enj oy looking attractive. They are, in fact, far more fashion- conscious than their mothers were twenty years ago. Not so long ago English women had the reputation of being amongst the worst dressed women in Europe.

On the other hand, English men have always had the reputation for being smartly dressed, but modern British boys are imitating their eighteenth- century ancestors and now wear gaily patterned shirts and brightly coloured jackets and trousers. During the 1960s, fashion shops for young people, also refer to as“boutiques”, were opened all over Britain, and London became the world's most important fashion center for the young. More than half of the ten million foreign tourists who come to Britain every year are under the age of thirty, and most of them never go further than London. You will be surprised to notice that not only the girls go shopping. The boys, too, go to Kensington, and also to King's Road, Chelsea.

It is possible today to dress well without spending a great deal of money. Many fashion shops and some big stores like Marks and Spencer's sell clothes which are both cheap and modern. And consequently it would be difficult for you to figure out or guess from their clothes the social background of British boys and girls.

Question No.23. Why does the woman mention advertisements in her talk?

Question No.24. According to the talk, who were regarded as the worst dressed people in Europe?

Question No.25. Why is it difficult to figure out the social background of British boys and girls?

Question No.26. Which of the following is NOT TRUE, according to the talk?

Questions 27 to 30 are based on the following conversation.

(Man) Excuse me, but is this Himalayan Kingdoms?

(Woman) Yes, yes, come on in. What can I do for you, sir?

(Man) I've got, some questions really. I had your brochure and I'd like to ask you a few questions about it, is that right?

(Woman) Yes, please, take a seat.

(Man) Thanks. Well, the brochure's really exciting, I mean I find it very hard to believe that, that, you can go to the Himalayas for an ordinary holiday and that you don't need to be super- fit, which the brochure says, is that right?

(Woman) Yes, that, that's, yeah that's quite right.

(Man) So, what kind of people usually go on holidays like this?

(Woman) All sorts of people, actually. I think the, the general thing is that people tend to be over the age of thirty. And can be up to, you know, over the age of sixty.

(Man) So what would be your minimum age range?

(Woman) Minimum fifteen. We don't. We don t really want to take children.

(Man) Yes. And – how do you know if people are fit enough, do you just have to rely on, on their say- so or do you require medical certificates?

(Woman) We only require a medical certificate if they're over the age of sixty.

(Man) Well, let me just ask you a little bit more. The price you quoted in you brochure covers all the flights, all the transportation and all the accommodation, does it?

  (Woman) Yes, that's right.

(Man) And the equipment and all the food.

(Woman) Yes, including the main meals in Delhi, the evening meals in Delhi.

(Man) Right. And is there anything that is NOT covered that I ought to add on?

(Woman) Airport tax, Indian airport tax, which is about five quid, which for practical purpose is better paid by yourself than by us.

(Man) And then the insurance, I suppose.

(Woman) Yes, the insurance, which is about, I think for that trip is forty one pounds fifty.

(Man) Good, OK. And if I'm interested in doing this, when's the next one?

(Woman) You mean the next Himalayan Summit Tour?

  (Man) Yes.

(Woman) Can I just check that. Let me see. Yes, the next tour is from the sixth of August, which is a Saturday, to the twenty seventh of August, which is also a Saturday.

(Man) OK, and when do I need to book up by?

(Woman) Well, two months in advance is the deadline, really. Any time between now and then.

(Man) Fine. Good. Thank you very much.

  (Woman) OK. My pleasure.

Question No.27. What is Himalayan Kingdoms?

Question No.28. According to the woman, who will need a medical certificate in order to go to the Himalayas for a holiday?

Question No.29. Which of the following is NOT covered by the quoted price?

Question No.30. If the man wants to take up the next trip for a holiday, a what time should he book up by?

  II.Passage Translation

Directions:In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. You will hear the passages ONLY ONCE. After you have heard each passage, translate it into Chinese and write your version in the corresponding space in your answer booklet. You may take notes while you are listening. Now, let's begin Passage Translation with the first passage.

  Passage 1

(Woman) Quiet, please. Quiet, boys and girls.Thank you. Now,I have a few announcements to make.First, thank you to everyone who had worked so hard to raise money for our new gymnasium. All of your efforts are appreciated and I think you'll all agree that now we have a stunning new sports facility at this school. And also would you all just give a moment to thank Mr. Forster, who is retiring this year for his incredible twenty- five years of service to our school. I'm sure that you'll all agree that he's been widely appreciated all these years. Thankyou, Mr. Forster.

  Passage 2

(Man) English people are said to be reserved and unsociable. This mistaken conception is due to certain social conventions. For example, English people seldom shake hands except when being introduced to someone for the first time. They hardly ever shake hands with their friends except when seeing them after a long period of time or saying goodbye before a long journey. Whether to shake hands or not in England is sometimes a problem, even for English people.
