   secretary n. 紧张的;look up from one’s desk(动词短语)从桌案上抬起头来;enter vt.进入;afford vt.支付得起;in a weak voice 声音很低地;interrupt vt.打断;receive vt.收到;extra adj.额外的
   Part II:
1:The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me.(从told me来看,see我是将来的事情,也就是从过去看将来,自然要用过去将来时)
示例2:Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!(先told,再收到钱,所以,相对于told来讲,receive就是将来的事情,故用过去将来时)
1:The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me.(划线部分就是told me的主要内容,本身就是一个句子,所以是宾语从句)
示例2:He said that business was very bad.(划线部分是said的内容)
示例3:He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries.(划线部分作为一个句子,是told me的具体内容)
示例4:I knew that my turn had come.(knew的内容就是划线部分)
示例5:Then he told me that I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year.(told me的具体内容就是划线的句子)
1:I felt very nervous when I entered.(由when引导)
示例2:After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.(由after引导)
   Part III:
The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth (1) see me. I (2 feel) very nervous (3) I went (4) his office. He did not even look (5) (6) his desk (7) I entered. (8) I (9) sat down, he said (10) business was very bad. He (11 tell) me (12) the firm (13 can) not afford (14) pay such large salaries (15) (16) twenty people (17) already (18 leave). I (19 know) (20) my turn (21) come. ‘Mr. Harmsworth,’ I said (22) a weak voice. ‘Don’t interrupt,’ he said. Then he smiled (23) told me I (24) receive (25) extra thousand pounds a year.
   (1) would; (2) felt; (3) when; (4) into; (5) up; (6) from; (7) when; (8) After; (9) had; (10) that; (11) told; (12) that; (13) could; (14) to; (15) and; (16) that; (17) had; (18) left; (19) knew; (20) that; (21) had; (22) in; (23) and; (24) would; (25) an
   Part IV:
   1. The secretary told me something. It was that Mr. Harmsworth would see me.
   2. I went into his office. I felt very nervous.
   3. I entered. He did not look up from his desk.
   4. I had sat down. He said that business was very bad.
   5. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come.
   6. I said in a weak voice, ‘Mr. Harmsworth.’ He said, ‘Don’t interrupt.’
   7. Then he smiled. He told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year.
   1. The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me.
   2. I went into his office and I felt very nervous. // I went into his office, feeling very nervous.// Going into his office, I felt very nervous. // Feeling very nervous, I went into his office.
   3. When I entered, he did not look up from his desk.
   4. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.

   Part VI:
   An Unusual Cat
My aunt Alice had a black cat named Sally and she thought it was wonderful. Sally did whatever Alice was doing. When she washed herself, the cat washed itself; when she looked at herself in the mirror, it looked at itself in the same mirror; if she talked to herself, the cat opened its mouth just like some one talking to herself. This gave Alice an idea. She decided to try to teach Sally to talk. She thought, "I'll give Sally the same food as I have myself and I'm sure that will help her to speak." And very soon, the cat was sitting on a chair at the table and was eating bread and butter, roast potatoes and Christmas pudding, and was drinking tea with sugar in it. One day I went to see Aunt Alice and there was Sally. She was drinking coffee and was smoking a cigarette.
Sally was certainly enjoying herself. In fact, I think they were both enjoying themselves, but still she didn't speak. Then Alice had another idea. She had an old parrot(鹦鹉) that was always talking. It talked to itself, it talked to Alice, and it talked to Sally. Alice was getting tired of this everlasting(永无休止的) talk, so she thought to herself, "If Sally eats the parrot, I'm sure it can help talking." So she killed the parrot, cooked it in butter and gave it, with fried potatoes and boiled(煮的) cabbage(卷心菜), to Sally.
Sally sat at the table and helped herself, very politely with a knife and fork, to the roast(烤) parrot, the fried potatoes and the cabbage, and she finished every bit of it. Then, suddenly she turned to Aunt Alice and shouted "Look out!" Aunt Alice was looking at her in such astonish¬ment(惊讶) that she hardly noticed what she said and the next moment, a piece of the ceiling(天花板) fell down on her head. Sally said: "She has spent five years getting me to talk and then when I speak, the fool doesn't listen."
